Mechanism

Ticagrelor inhibits platelet activation by blocking the P2Y12 ADP receptor, preventing platelet aggregation and thrombus formation.

Side Effects

  • Bleeding tendency (most common)
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Bruising

Contraindication

  • Active bleeding (e.g., peptic ulcer, intracranial bleeding)
  • History of intracranial hemorrhage
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Hypersensitivity to Ticagrelor

Interaction

  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin)
  • CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin)
  • Other anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs
  • Statins (simvastatin, lovastatin – high doses)
  • Digoxin (monitor levels)

Warning and Precautions

  • Use cautiously in patients with liver disease
  • Do not stop abruptly (risk of heart events increases)
  • Use with low-dose aspirin only (≤100 mg/day)
